Island could follow Shetland's lead on wind farms

Wed, 11 Apr 2012

The development of a wind farm in our coastal waters could be the way ahead according to the Isle of Man Government.

The Scottish authorities have recently given consent for a project in Shetland which would supply electricity to mainland Scotland.

It will bring an annual income of around £30m to the local community there.

The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture is now asking if the Isle of Man can follow Shetland's lead.

As part of the Marine Plan, an assessment is already underway in Manx waters which could identify potential sites for a wind farm.

Director of Environment at DEFA Martin Hall acknowledges some members of the public may be sceptical.[Play media file below]
