Elections will be held in less than half of the local authorities on the Island.

Nominations for candidates to serve in local Government closed yesterday.

Only 10 of the 24 boards will need a public vote to chose who'll serve their local community.

The Department of Infrastructure - which is responsible for local authorities - says it'll now focus on encouraging a good turnout in areas which will be holding a vote.

Infrastructure Minister David Cretney believes there are too many boards, and that they should have more powers devolved to them from central Government.

Previous attempts to reform local government have been unsuccessful, but Mr Cretney is optimistic he'll be able to make some changes after the vote on 26th April [play clip]
