Keys candidate cleared of making false statement

Wed, 15 Feb 2012

An election candidate has been cleared of making a false statement on his nomination paper.

Nigel Dobson who contested a seat in Garff in last September's general election attended court this week for a hearing.

The question on the nomination form asked if House of Keys candidates had ever been convicted of an offence which could carry a jail term.

However, Mr Dobson hadn't realised he should have declared a previous drink-driving conviction.

The court accepted the 58 year old hadn't deliberately set out to deceive people and that the offence, which was committed in 2009, was already in the public domain as it was reported in the media at the time.
