Only buy fuel from official sources, warn police and customs

Wed, 14 Dec 2011

Police are warning that motorists who buy stolen or contaminated fuel could have their vehicles seized and be hit with a fine.

Using some fuels, such as red diesel, is illegal in road cars.

Such fuels are marked with chemical dyes, which aren't always visible to the naked eye.

Officers warn that customs and excise can seize any vehicle found to be using stolen or contaminated fuel.

Motorists are being urged not to buy their fuel from unknown sources, and to stick with reputable fuel companies or garages.

More information can been obtained by contacting Customs and Excise.
