Keep ambulances free for life-threatening emergencies

Mon, 21 Nov 2011

In the run up to Christmas, we're being reminded of the importance of keeping ambulances free for life-threatening emergencies.

The Department of Health is encouraging people to take notice of its 'Choose Well' campaign.

It gives advice and information about what services people should use if they get ill or have an accident.

It aims to reduce the number of unnecessary ambulance call-outs.

There are examples of people on the Island dialling 999 for things like hangovers or toothache.

The campaign advises when it's appropriate to call MEDS or GPs and when to go to the Minor Injuries Unit at Ramsey Cottage Hospital or Accident and Emergency.

Last December and January saw a 30% increase in calls for an ambulance.
