Unemployed 16-24 years old make up half of jobless total

Wed, 16 Nov 2011

Almost half of unemployed people on the Island are between the ages of 16 and 24.

Figures revealed in Tynwald this week show 448 young people claimed job seekers allowance or were registered at the Job Centre in October.

Last month, 910 people on the Island in total were out of work.

Speaker of the House of Keys Steve Rodan asked the Chief Minister how the government is encouraging companies to hire those in the younger age groups.

In a written response, it was stated that a wide range of employers are asked to get involved in work placement schemes.

This year, 58 people have taken part and 22 have been given permanent employment as a result.

The government says it also administers apprenticeships and provides training grants.
