Railways Society lodges Tynwald petition

Wed, 06 Jul 2011

The Isle of Man Railway Society has handed in a petition at Tynwald over a disagreement with the Department of Community, Culture and Leisure.

The Society signed three steam engines over to the DCCL after a dispute over asbestos removal.

The Department had been storing two engines owned by the society which had asbestos lined boilers.

The Society was quoted £22,000 to have the asbestos removed by a specialist firm from the UK.

However the DCCL insisted the work would have to be carried out on Island at a cost of £45,00.

Unable to justify the costs, the Railway Society gave three engines to the Department for £1.

Chairman of the Society, Robert Hendry, says they weren't happy with that solution [play clip]
