Island shouldn't withdraw from TV licence fee says report

Mon, 04 Jul 2011

The Isle of Man shouldn't consider withdrawing from the TV Licence fee, according to a new report.

A Tynwald Committee was set up in 2009 to look into whether or not Island residents should be paying for BBC services.

The committee chaired by MHK Graham Cregeen studied the feasibility and impact of withdrawing from the agreement.

The findings are due to go before Tynwald later this month.

The report recommends that the licence fee stays and that Tynwald should concentrate its efforts on getting value for money from the BBC.

However, it does say the issue should be kept under review.

The document goes on to recommend that during future negotiations with the BBC, the Island should try to make sure that there's more comprehensive cover of Manx affairs and several other improvements to current services.
