Postal workers urged not to strike

Wed, 16 Mar 2011

The Chairman of the Post Office is urging workers not to strike despite the outcome of the ballot.

In a statement, Alan Crowe says bosses are open to further talks but he reiterates the point that they are bound by the freeze on public sector pay.

He believes strike action would be reckless as it would only damage business, make customers and the public unhappy and put jobs at risk.

The Legislative Council member also states that the Post Office - which is a Statutory Board of Tynwald - still wouldn't be able to offer a pay increase even if workers do strike.

The statement goes on to say the Post Office is saddened and disappointed by the result of the ballot.

Contingency plans are being drawn up so that the postal service is able to cope if the strike goes ahead.
